Vermont Custom Builders of Barns & Homes

Many of our customers have taken the car barns one step further to accommodate living spaces. As studios, offices, guesthouses, workshops or homes, these barns are the epitome of multi-functional outbuildings. Often starting with our basic 24' x 32' 3-car barn we are intrigued with the variations achieved by each customer infusing their personal touches to create a unique version.

The freestanding 28' x 48' Grand Barn offers private quarters for guests featuring pine paneling throughout, wide pine floors, galley kitchen, two bedrooms, and full custom tile bath. Besides guest living, the first floor of this grand barn houses a one bay garage. The covered entry highlights the main door for living while an overhead door sheathed with pine, an "X" and a transom above emulate details from historic barns.

Now that's what I call a cupola! Very often homeowners and builders alike have a tendency to undersize cupolas on Vermont Barns. But if you look around Vermont you notice that the old New England barns often have oversized cupolas. Mike built this 28'x 40' barn with an apartment at the top of a rocky but beautiful windblown meadow. In anticipation of the main house to follow all of the blasting was completed before construction. A large section towards the rear was designated upstairs and down as a comfortable getaway while the front area houses the vehicles. See Post and Beam Construction for more photos.

Custom doors accommodate David's vehicle and canoe downstairs while a 28'-long dormer and taller 12/12 pitch create an extra spacious office area upstairs. Sherill chose picture windows plus one attractive octagonal on the front gable to provide much natural light. This new barn has been positioned so that the mountain view can be enjoyed from the loft area. At a later date the upstairs was finished and serves also as guest overflow. Interior

A different approach for a Vermont Barn that utilizes the length is to drive in under the eaves as shown here in this 24' x 32'. Set up as a 2- bay, Larry's barn is used as a workshop on the lower level with a steel beam carrier to eliminate upright supports in the middle. Upstairs is Judy's space for creating colorful rugs and quilting while she enjoys the view offered through the windows in the shed dormer. Workshop

Set back in the woods and matching the siding of the main house we were able to give George and Carole their much-needed guesthouse. The whole building, including the garage area, is insulated and heated by a furnace. Besides the garage, the ground level features a utility room and entry hall with ski racks while the upstairs features a full bathroom, kitchenette and half wall divider for the sleeping area. In keeping with the house the pine paneling is pickled (whitewashed) for brightness and runs throughout the living space.

Surpassing John and Jane's expectations, this oversized 28' x 36' Vermont Barn, overlooking lush mountains, could easily qualify for grand barn status. The rear section is insulated and partitioned off from the garage area. French doors--behind sliding barn doors-shiplap paneling, and a gas fireplace make this room enjoyably comfortable.

A nice change from our typical barn red structures, these homeowners decided to stain the rough pine a rich green color. The foundation includes the shed addition, making the 12' extension fully functional. The downstairs offers ample space for vehicles, equipment and workshop while the upper loft serves as a workroom/studio for Phyllis's artwork. The additional light from the dormer makes the space truly usable. Heavy sculptures can be lifted up through the front gable loft door by means of a block and tackle off the extended ridgepole. A windowed cupola is fit with a lantern allowing Steve to see his house from the ski slopes! Front View  •  107 Quiet Acres Road  •  Manchester VT 05255  •  802-367-3021     Follow us on Facebook
